Behind the Landscape, 1989/90
acrylic paint, mixed media, pencil, pastel (soft) on paperA playful composition that consists of animated brushstrokes has been broken up onto different panels and has been put back together again. In places the artist adds fine pencil scribbles that might be reminiscent of the curious and exhilarating marks a child might make when given pencil and paper for the first time. However, the apparent ease with which the artist paints is exactly where the artist’s strength lies as he opts for an unfussy sophistication. Patelli invents shapes and contrasts colour and texture against each other. The resulting structures seem like they are carefully suspended, as if in defiance of gravity. The ephemeral shapes glide like an ever evolving cloud formation does across the sky.
