About the artist (1913–1981)
Bleijenberg was student of Joop Kropff, also featured in the collection, at the Royal Dutch Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. Bleijenberg’s Cobra*-esque paintings are perhaps most emblematic of his oeuvre although his compositional structures are testimony of his thoughtfulness. The painter shows grit, as he set vivid impasto colours against somber ones, creating an intriguing depth to an otherwise flat picture plane. By deconstructing the familiar world near abstract scenes are produced that frequently feature curious faces, some obvious, others simplified or almost hidden. The humerous facial expressions are contrasted by their sometimes melancholic undertones.
The artist won several awards during his career, which included the prestigious Jacob Maris Prijs, Netherlands 1949 and the the Pulchri prijs, Netherlands, 1969.
*CoBrA – Was a post war art movement which peaked in the second half of the 1940’s and early 1950’s. The name stands for the cities of its leading members (Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam).
